Pub of the Year – it’s the Cross Keys

We are delighted to announce the Pub of the Year Award for 2017. Once again strong candidates made it a difficult choice but I’m sure you would agree that the The Cross Keys, Siddal make a deserving winner. Not just well kept beer but the atmosphere created by Hugh and Ruth has kept customers returning again and again to this pub that is away from the centre of Halifax. We will be making the presentation on Wednesday 29th March at 8.00 pm.

The second Calderdale Beer & Cider Festival, organised by the Halifax & Calderdale branch of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale), takes place this weekend in the Waterfront Hall at Hebden Bridge Town Hall. More than fifty traditional cask-conditioned ales from independent breweries the length and breadth of the UK, plus several traditional ciders and perries will be available to sample in quantities of a third of, a half of, or a full pint. This year’s festival will have a railway theme to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the opening of the Manchester & Leeds Railway through the Calder Valley and many beers with railway-themed names will be on sale.

While the principal objective of the festival is to raise money for CAMRA’s ongoing campaigns to support pubs and breweries, the festival charity for this year is the Watermark Calderdale flood relief fund and unused beer tokens and cash donations will be given to this very worthy cause which has helped so many individuals and businesses in the Upper Calder Valley since the disastrous floods on Boxing Day. The fund will also have a stall in the Town Hall foyer during the festival giving out information on their work and selling various beer-related items to raise further funds.

The festival will be open on Thursday 22nd September from 2pm to 10pm (admission: £1, free to card-carrying CAMRA members); 12 noon – 11pm on Friday 23rd (admission: £2 or £1 to members) and 12 noon to 10 pm on Saturday 24th (admission £2 or £1 to members, but free to everyone after 6pm). Glasses will be available for a £1 returnable deposit and hot and cold food will be available from the Town Hall cafe until 8pm. Unfortunately under-18s and dogs (with the exception of guide and assistance dogs) cannot be admitted and under-25s may have to produce evidence of age identification.

One of the highlights of the festival will be a celebration pint-pulling at 4.30pm by Ms Kathryn Hey of a special beer – Hey’s Gold – which she has commissioned from Bingley Brewery to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the closure of Hey’s Brewery in Bradford, founded by her ancestors in the mid-nineteenth century, following its takeover by Websters of Halifax. Another highlight on the Thursday evening, commencing at 7.30pm, will be a performance by local womens’ morris dancing side, The Hebden Bridge Hill Millies.

Elland to supply Porter to Festival

Just heard that our Oh Mr Porter moment will be an old one – 1872. More news to follow as well as other bad railway metaphors.  After the discussion last night we were aiming to have a balanced offering of beers but its nice to see some old favourites. Barefaced Brewery Black Cardomom Comfirmed

We are proud to announce that we will be serving a brand new beer from a brand brewery at the Calderdale Beer and Cider Festival 2016. You’ll never have seen it or tried it before. The brewery is Barefaced Beer Company from Golcar, Huddersfield and the beer is Black Cardamom Ale (4.4%). The brewer, Jack Pickering, said that it’s ‘a light brown beer that goes down very well with everyone who tries it. It’s very much a beer with some spice in it’ As well casking his beers, Jack is also bottling 4 9’s with every monthly brew. We hope you’ll enjoy Jack’s beer. The beer festival team can’t wait to try it.
